books
i wrote these books because...
as a struggling actor, I wanted an agent, any agent, but after my big break, when agents were finally calling,I had no idea who or how to choose. I knew about the big agencies but even with my break, they were too big for me. I knew the names of my friend's agents -- but I they all looked the same to me.

as it turned out, I attracted a great agent, but I've always felt that with more information, I would have made a better partner for my agent and a better advocate for myself, particularly after I moved to Los Angeles.

my kids tell me I wrote my first book because I wasn't working, that may be, but that's not how I remember it. Or maybe that was part of it, because I wasn't happy with my agent and I didn't know what to do about it and I still didn't know one agent from another.

so I decided to write a book about agents. That would give me the courage to call them. I would ask all the questions I was too afraid to ask on my own. Once I started calling agents asking for their time, there was no turning back, I had to come up with a book.

i took the books to The Drama Book Shop in New York and Samuel French in Los Angeles. The first book, "An Actor's Workbook" which was centered on Los Angeles Agents, ultimately became "The Los Angeles Agent book" when The Drama Book Shop asked for a book about New York agents.

my distributor wanted a book to be sold all over the world ("How to Sell Yourself as Actor") which though written long ago still encourages me and gives me new ideas every time I go back and read it. Writers and directors asked for their books and that's how one show biz title became five.

i haven't updated the writer and director books for years, so they are no longer for sale except by special order to people who understand that.

my books are now available not only here, but at Drama Book Shop in NYC and at Larry Edmunds in Hollywood. The new 7th edition of How to Sell Yourself as an Actor is due soon...you can write to me personally at ideas76@aol.com to purchase books.
